Four stations serve Osaka Castle and none of them is next to it. Whichever you pick, you have a 15 to 20 minute walk through the park to reach the main tower. That walk is the part almost every set of directions leaves out, and it is why people arrive later and hotter than they planned.
Which station is right for you depends less on distance than on which line you are already standing on.

On the subway, use Tanimachi Yonchome. On JR, use Osakajokoen. Do not change lines to reach a "better" station — the walk from each is similar enough that a transfer costs you more time than it saves. The one real difference is the gate you arrive at: Tanimachi Yonchome sends you through Otemon, which is the approach the castle itself recommends.
It is 15 to 20 minutes across open parkland, mostly flat, with a climb up to the tower at the end. In July and August that walk is hot and largely unshaded, which is the argument for arriving near the 9:00 opening rather than at midday — the same argument the queue makes.
The park itself is free and open around the clock, so nothing about this walk requires a ticket. What needs a ticket is going inside the tower.
Before the walk: is the queue going to cost you the morning?
On busy days the ticket window alone runs past 30 minutes, and in peak periods the window and the elevator can be 30 to 45 minutes each. Having walked 20 minutes across the park, that is the point where the visit either works or falls apart.
