Is Osaka Castle Worth It?

The grounds are worth it for everyone. The interior is worth it for some people, and the difference is not about money.

What you are actually paying for

The current main tower is a 1931 reconstruction, rebuilt in concrete, with a lift inside. It is not a preserved wooden keep, and visitors who arrive expecting Himeji are the ones who leave disappointed. What it contains is a genuine museum — eight floors on Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the castle's history — and an observation deck with a wide view over Osaka.

Go inside if

You want the history, and you will actually read the exhibits.
You want the view over the city from the top.
It is your first time in Osaka and you want the whole thing, not the outline.

Skip the inside if

You came for the photograph. The best shots are from the park, not the deck.
You are short on time — see how long you need.
You have already seen an original keep such as Himeji or Matsumoto and want that again. This is a different kind of building.
It is a peak weekend and the queue is running 45 minutes.

The honest summary

At 1,200 yen this is an inexpensive museum in a spectacular setting, not a once-in-a-lifetime interior. The park around it is free, open around the clock, and is the reason most people remember the visit. Deciding between them is the whole question — and it is worth deciding before you are standing in the queue.
